You can select any number of objects simultaneously by <keycombo><keycap function="shift">Shift</keycap><mousebutton role="click">click</mousebutton></keycombo>ing them. Or, you can <mousebutton role="mouse-drag">drag</mousebutton> around the objects you need to select; this is called <firstterm>rubberband selection</firstterm>. (Selector creates rubberband when dragging from an empty space; however, if you press <keycap function="shift">Shift</keycap> before starting to drag, Inkscape will always create the rubberband.)
