Apart from SVG, Inkscape can import (File > Import) most bitmap formats (PNG, BMP, JPG, XPM, GIF, etc.), plain text (requires Perl), PS and EPS (requires Ghostscript), PDF and AI format (AI version 9.0 or newer).
